This erudite, cogent perusal of Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm's Nursery and Household Tales is, for the most part, accessible to a lay audience. Tatar charts the evolution of the tales through manuscript form and the various editions, and offers what she maintains is the first complete English translation of the prefaces to the first and second editions. The Grimms abandoned a scholarly effort to salvage pure remnants of folk poetry, advances Tatar, and "with each new edition, the tales veered more sharply away from the rough-hewn simplicity of their first versions to a sanitized and stylized literary form that proved attractive to both parents and children." She demonstrates how the Grimms purged the collection of references to sexuality and incestuous desire but intensified violence, particularly when it took the form of revenge. In opposition to child psychologist Bruno Bettelheim, Tatar warns that some cautionary tales may instill fear, rather than confidence, in children; regarding "Bluebeard," she faults Bettelheim for turning a tale depicting the most brutal kind of serial murders into a story about idle female curiosity and duplicity. Tatar (Spellbound: Studies on Mesmerism and Literature) chairs the German literature department at Harvard University. Illustrated.

Tatar brings into focus both familiar and not-so-familiar fairy tales as she by highlighting a number of important areas: the genesis and editorial history of the tales as they evolved from folk material to children's stories; interpretive approaches; nature and structure; the humble, fearless hero and humbled, hard-working heroine; villains; and, briefly, revenge. Her observations are unburdened by Marxist, psychoanalytical, or pedagogical biases, instead resting on sound and thorough scholarship and careful reading and comparison of texts. The absence of a bibliography is lamentable but should not prevent acquisition of this exceptional study by every library with a fairy tale collection. Interesting, concise summary of the story surrounding the Titanic. While there were some interesting new insights for me particularly related to the ship interior design and the stories around specific passengers, most of the material was already very familiar to me. Because the book is so short, of necessity, it provides scant backup for the ultimate claim that the likely cause was bad luck rather than errors by the crew and design/fabrication flaws in the ship itself.The writing style is fluid and easy to digest in about an hour. I think of this as the ”Readers Digest Condensed Book” of history on the Titanic. Good as far as it goes but I tend to prefer more in depth study of historical events, etc. rather than to dabble in such things. Recommended if you are looking for a quick review or study of the topic. Otherwise, there are more comprehensive works on this subject (one that has been thoroughly thrashed in books, movies and TV). Because of this, I think there is little need for this book. This format, to me, is more amenable to more obscure yet interesting subject matter.

This short information packed story fascinated me and enlightened me..The authors wonderful detailed writing style helped me to learn much more of the harsh realities of the Titanic’s origin and it's demise which surprised me, angered me and saddened me. And, in some strange way it was good or helpful to know who was partly responsible yet angered me knowing it could have been prevented I must say having seen the. Movie Titanic afforded me amazing visuals which brought the telling of the Titanic’s history to life. I was fascinated by some of the passengers described and named - their lives and loves and reasons for being on board were brilliantly written by the author as well as their wealth and status and their part in the Titanic’s construction and decisions that caused many to die in attempts to save money. Tragic. The crews fates from captain to janitor were intimately described in heart wrenching detail.The miscommunication defined rendered me speechless as the harsh reality that they could have all been saved if only the ship nea by that saw the red rockets saw them as distress rockets and not merely a location indicator. The fear and horror of the ship's sinking was well written and took my breath away. I was glad to read that all was not in vain as many regulations for safer sea travel resulted from the sinking of the Titanic. The author did an excellent job bringing this disaster to deep personal light.

Since man first ventured onto the oceans human history has recorded many ship wrecks with significant loss of life. Argueably the most memorable sea diaster in history, and the one I find most fasinating for reasons I will discuss in this review, is the sinking of RMS Titanic on April 14-15, 1912. As described in the author's narative, after boarding the crew and most passangers, the RMS Titanic, advertised as "the Ship of Dreams" and "Unsinkable", began her maiden voyage on Wednesday April 10, 1912 from Southhampton, England sailing to Queenstown, Ireland, to take on more passengers. The RMS Titanic, the newest addition to the prestigious White Star Line Company, with 2,223 passengers and crew aboard steamed out of Queenstown, on the morning of April11, 1912 travling the long established North Atlantic shipping lane, bound for New York City. Cruising at near top speed, without incident April 11, 12, 13, and 14. The Titanic crew did their jobs diligently, and the passengers of all classes enjoyed the beautiful decor, wonderful food, and the many other amenities available to them. The weather was very pleasant until it became quite cool the morning of April 14. The Titanic received Iceberg Warnings that same morning and took appropriate percautions. At 1140 pm April 14, lookouts reported the an iceberg, and despitei taking prompt and correct action the bridge officer was unable to avoid the collision with an iceberg to the right of her bow which tore through 5 of the 7 water tight sections of the ship. First responders reported that the ship was taking on massive amounts of sea water, with14 feet of water aboard at 1159 pm. The Captain ordered abandon ship shortly there after. Although Titanic carried the number of lifeboats required by law, they could only hold 1000 souls. Further the lack of lifeboat training and drills for crew or passengers resulted in only 705 people surviving the diaster. At 0240 am on April 15, 1912, while the the ships orcastra played on the great ships sank into the frigid North Atlantic waters with more than 1,500 souls still onboard.This book was written and published by Hourly Histories. The sinking of the so called "unsinkable ship" on her maiden voyage shook faith in technologies, as surely as the World War that erupted not two full years later shattered faith as war technologies were employed to slaughter millions of people. What ever the case, the story of the Titanic is an enthralling tale, from its conception, to its demise, to its re-discovery decades later. This was a good read that almost everyone can enjoy!

As the title suggests, this is an informative quick look at the Titanic’s design, construction, and only voyage. The book is a thumbnail history of the “unsinkable” ship that sunk. Theories abound that the fire in boiler room 6, directly under the forward stack, burned for several days and was burning when the ship set sail. The basic theory is that the fire weakened the metal hull plates that were struck by the iceberg. Another omission was the construction of the “water tight” compartments. They were rectangular containers open at the top, thus when filled the water could spill into the next compartment. Apparently that is what happened.I recommend this book for those curious or seeking more details about the sinking. It provides a good, quick summary of the ship and its short history. And, it also mentions the Titanic’s sister ships which have received little notoriety.
