About the Author
A los nueve años, Stevens comenzó a asistir a los servicios dominicales de la escuela en un templo que enseña Kriya Yoga. About the Author
JIM PARSHALL is a Senior Process Automation Engineer at Eli Lilly and Co. He is currently assigned to the Indianapolis Dry Products site, which serves as a development center for new tablet and capsule products and provides the manufacturing capacity for worldwide distribution. After coordinating the development of an automation and information technology strategy for the site, Jim is now planning strategic automation and information integration projects. He leads the corporate team responsible for overseeing a global supplier alliance with Rockwell Automation and is a member of the company's global process automation strategy team.

Before joining Eli Lilly, Jim worked as an automation engineer at Ben & Jerry's Homemade in St. Albans, Vt. He led the design and delivery of process control systems during the exciting startup of the company's newest and largest plant. As part of his process control and supervisory system responsibilities, Jim led the successful installation of an S88-aware batch control and management system.

He received his BSEE from Kettering University (formerly General Motors Institute), and received his MSEE with an emphasis in manufacturing from Purdue University. Jim is an active participant in the World Batch Forum, and he is a member of the ISA SP95 standard committee on enterprise-control system integration.

LARRY LAMB is the Software Manager at Oakes Electric, a Rockwell Automation distributor in New England and New York. He is responsible for leading the business and technical aspects of providing technology-based solutions to customers.

Before joining Oakes, Larry was a controls engineer at Ben & Jerry's Homemade in St. Albans, Vt. His expertise drove the design of the control architecture at the new plant in St. Albans, and Larry was responsible for writing the process control and operator interface code for the plant production area.

Larry received his BSEE from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.

About the Author
John Gordon Davis was born in Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, and educated in South Africa. He earned a BA in Political Science, paying his way through university by working as a deckhand on British merchant ships and on the Dutch whaling fleet at the Antarctic. He went on to take an LL.B. degree whilst serving as a judge´s clerk in Rhodesia. Called to the Bar, he was appointed an assistant public prosecutor in the Magistrate´s Courts during the troubled years leading up to Rhodesia´s Unilateral Declaration of Independence, before becoming Crown Counsel in the Attorney General´s Chambers. He was later appointed to the same position in Hong Kong. He quit this post to become a full-time writer when his first book, "Hold My Hand I´m Dying" became an instant best-seller. Other bestselling novels followed. A veteran seaman; he and his Australian born wife, Rosemary, sailed round most of the world in a succession of yachts. Upon retirement, they travelled widely and from their home in a lovely old Spanish farmhouse in Andalucia, Spain, he also ran highly successful writing courses for both aspiring and published authors. John Gordon Davis sadly died in 2014 leaving behind a rich literary heritage, including several unpublished novels he had worked on even as he supposedly slowed the pace.

I purchased this book for a mental health and stress education course. It was so interesting and the only "textbook" I looked forward to reading. I have recommended this book to people on more than one occasion! Each chapter has a way of describing the complexity of things as well as putting them in very simple terms to better understand. It often refers back to zebras and the safari animal prey/predator relationship hence the title. If you're looking for an interesting and educational read that isn't boring than this is for you. It will have you drawn in wanting to learn more as you go through the different ways that stress affects you mentally, physically, socially, and emotionally.

I'm halfway through this book and I love it! I bought this book after watching a 1-hour lecture on depression by Mr Sapolsky at Harvard University and I immidiately fell in love with his style. In this book, Sapolsky has done a wonderful job explaining complicated sceintific matters, experiments and medical terms in very simple and easy to comprehend manner and even managed to throw some humor in there. It's not your typical self help book to teach you techniques on how to overcome stress. Rather it explains how your body performs under strees and is impacted (sometimes permanently) by it. I still find it really helpful in the sense that it shows you how your mental and phisical health is completely dependant on this issue and hence the importance of stress management.

Easy read with plenty of humor. Very applicable to every day life for me. Made me realize that so much of what is wrong is my perspective and attitude.

This book is very good on issues related to stress; my only concern is that it has not been sufficiently updated to down play the relationship with ulcers, which modern scientific theory has shown is more directly caused by bacteria (h. Pylori).

My professor has recommended this author highly for his decades of research on the dangers of stress. This book is entertaining and easy to follow. It is an eye-opener! (For further information on Dr. Sapolsky's research, there is an hour long PBS episode "Stress: Portrait of a Killer" on his studies that is fantastic!)Anyway, I highly recommend this book to anyone curious about the damage of the body and mind stress can cause. Life changing for me!

I love this book, and I evoke much of what I learned from it at dinner parties and gatherings. Dr. Sapolsky is an astute student of science--he never speaks in absolutes and is careful to approach the research he presents from multiple perspectives. An excellent read for those interested in the subject of the underlying biology of stress and anxiety.

I know that most people consider the correlation between stress and heart disease to be old news, but as Robert Sapolsky carefully explains, it took a lot of painstaking studies to prove this. In fact, the relationships he discusses are still controversial in the cardiovascular medical world. Sapolsky is an excellent writer explains very clearly how the relationships between stress and heart disease were finally solidly proven and also is very careful to note the limits of conclusions we can draw from these. A reader will learn just how important the stress in one's lifestyle is for many aspects of their health, and also, how the ways in which we cope with stress can greatly affect our health.I found this book to be a great read. I learned a lot about the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, and the immune system. Anyone with "firstworldproblems" should read this book.

An in depth read. I suffer from multiple spinal surgeries and deal with constant pain. This provided insight into the biochemical interaction associated with bodily functions. I've got a degree in Biology so was capable of understanding his biochemical overviews. But, he made it easy by relating to actual examples and experiments.

I had heard of Louis Zamperini from his affiliation with the Billy Graham organization because my Mother admired Reverend Graham. But I did not dig into his life story. Of course the biography and movie â€œUnbrokenâ€ put this fine man in the public eye in a very prominent way. I wanted to read HIS words, so I got this book. While I admired the movie, I was disappointed that it focused only on his story as a prisoner of war after being lost at sea. I think the really important part of his life was his struggles after he came home and then his conversion to Christ. Of course, that makes our age most uncomfortable. But without that, he would have been just a brave POW who came home and fell apart with drink (as my grandfather did after WWI) and was destroyed by PTSD (which they called battle fatigue or some such). All the Olympics and his war experiences became significant because of his conversion and the way he used his life and experiences to bless, motivate, teach, and lead others â€“ especially troubled youth. He understood troubled youth because he was one himself.This book tells the various stories from his life, but with the purpose of illustrating points he wants to make to help people live better, happier, more positive lives. He never holds himself up as a paragon to emulate, but uses his stories to illustrate what he did wrong, what is possible, and how he found the right way and used that path to help others with the message that you can, too!He talks about the focus, strength, and lessons that running gave his life and what appearing in the Olympics meant for him. He talks about the importance of being prepared for what life throws at you, because you wonâ€™t be able to anticipate it all. And you need a sense of humor, as well. A positive attitude each day will provide the power to get through dark times.The lessons of his horrible war experiences are critical. He teaches about the power of not giving in, but also in learning to not hate. That hating is self-punishment and forgiveness is freeing and healing. The secret to life, he teaches us, isnâ€™t the events or circumstances you have but your attitude towards them. After the war, he was still lost. But there is a way and an answer for everything. Of course, many times people will not accept the answer or follow the way. Great follow up to his previous work via Devils on my Heel or Unbroken. Easy read. Book size (physically) is about 2/3 the size of a regular book, so even though it has 230 pages it's more like 125 pages if it were a regular size book. [It's the shape of square versus a rectangular book] Still, it's great to hear the last words and testimony of Louis before his passing. Great life lessons because he takes the reader into the internal thought process as he is going through the adverse moments. I would compare this to Viktor Frankl's: Man's Search for Meaning.

Louis was a true example of courage. I can't imagine how a person that goes through what he experienced has so much positivity to spread.The book is about how the experience he lived as POW impacts his choices and how he channels the negative energy into positive acts after he is released. If you are looking for a book about his journey during war, this is not the book you want to read. This book is only about some of his experiences after the war is finished.

Great book. Louie faced many obstacles in his long life and this book reminds the reader that it's how we face these challenges that make us who we are. This book is both inspiring and reassuring that "if you can take it, you can make it." "Without dark clouds, there could be no silver linings." Louie embraced life . . . all of it. And what a life he had because he accepted his circumstances, good and bad, and grew from them throughout his 97 years--always learning, always experiencing and never holding back. Perhaps the best part of the book is about the importance of forgiveness; how forgiveness liberates the person harmed. I highly recommend this book, especially on the eve of a new year; the chance for new beginnings.

Truly the persecuted Church of China has been watered by the seeds of its martyrs (yet revival continues in China while foolish Western Christians rush headlong into secular socialism like lambs to the slaughter). Brother Yun's book is a remarkable series of adventures in the Holy Spirit. Sometimes mind-boggling, often suspenseful, and frequently heart-wrenching, The Heavenly Man is just the kind of book smug, self-reliant Western Christians need to read to consider their own ways. What I like about this book is that despite the truly remarkable miracle testimonies recorded here, Yun also includes a great amount of introspection and soul-searching over his own ministry failures, missteps and stubborn self-will. The Chinese Church is not perfect nor are its leaders. Brother Yun is not afraid to acknowledge the mistakes in his own life. Paul Hattaway, the co-author and an expert on the Chinese Church, has done a remarkable job meticulously verifying the sometimes unbelievable aspects of Brother Yun's story. And while many of the testimonies seem too fantastic to believe, I found his life to be no more fantastic than the lives of the Bible saints all Christians are supposed to accept at face value. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. And Jesus said we would do "greater works than these" (His own) so why are the miracles in this book so hard for some to accept? As a Pentecostal/Full-Gospel believer with much experience in overseas evangelism, I found the wonderful miracles of Brother Yun's life to be what you would expect from a body of believers who have had to rely entirely on God's provision in the face of relentless poverty and persecution (something Western Christians can barely imagine). And Yun's most radical miracle testimony, the 74-day fast that strengthened his Christian resolve in China's most notorious prison, which many argue is medically impossible, is actually no more radical than what I have read in various survival and prisoner of war books. Except that Yun fasted in the power of the Holy Spirit! A Chinese writer living in Germany and a Chinese House leader from another group outside Yun's own network have been among his most vocal critics -- despite the overwhelming testimonies of hundreds of others who have known Yun for decades. That kind of slanderous criticism only helps me realize that even among the "saintly martyrs" of the persecuted church there will always be those who say "I am of Paul" or "I am of Apollos." Fine. But don't let the rantings of a few self-appointed online critics keep you from reading this stirring, well-written book. Brother Yun's current venture in support of the Back to Jerusalem campaign is particularly exciting as my research suggests this idea arose simultaneously in the hearts of many Christians throughout the global church, a miracle that could only be attributed to the work of the Holy Spirit. This book is one of the best I have read all year and is highly recommended.

Anyone living in a country with the freedom to choose religion has no idea what persecution means or how to live by true faith the way this man from China does! I was humbled and moved by the unshakable depth of Brother Yun's faith despite countless beatings, imprisonment, and even the discipline of His loving Father God! Yun lives the life of Paul, focused on obeying each and every word that God said in the scriptures as well as what He says now through His Holy Spirit. The Heavenly Man is a must-read for anyone who thinks they know how Jesus called us to live, and it will convict you if you allow it to challenge your thinking and way of life.

This book is about authentic, unregistered Christianity, something we do not see much of in the United States as the the evangelical church has largely been nationalized and politicized, and incorporated into the state. A few quotes:"The true church is not an organization controlled by the rules of men but a holy collection of living stones with Jesus Christ as the cornerstone.""We believe that Jesus is the head of the church, not the government."This book will inspire like no other, save the Bible itself.

This reads like a suspense novel. God is good and living His way is an adventure, but what this man wentthrough and how God showed up read like the Book of Acts ! Truly an encouragement, this sets a fireunder any type of complacency ! Also,to show us, we just need to make the first more and God is there !I was privileged to see Brother Yun speak in person. This humble man, in broken English brought such ananointing into the room, I fell to my knees and wept !Every one should read this book. Also pray the US doesn't come to the point of one world religion !

I love this book. It's such a good glimpse into the lives of Christians in China during the 50s and the horrible persecution they faced. As an autobiography, the book includes most of Yun's life, but focuses primarily on his experiences as a Christian--ranging from pastoring house churches, speaking, teaching, burnout, being beaten, running from authorities, his experiences in jail and having a family. You get a graphic picture of what Jesus means when He says, "Take up your cross and follow Me." While none of us may go through the exact trials and pressures Brother Yun and those with him faced (even in China, things haven gotten somewhat better), experiencing his testimony can inspire us in the States (and elsewhere) to live with the freedom and boldness Jesus calls us to.Another book that goes good with this is These Are The Generations, a book written by a North Korean Christian family about their experiences of their family through three generations. It's similar to this book, but also very different. If Christianity in other countries is something you're interested in, definitely check this book out too.
